I recently went to Frank Rendon Park in Daytona Beach, Florida to see the Gull Fly In during the Palm Coast Birds of a Feather Festival. The beach has one of the largest congregation of gulls on any beach in the United States. As many as 30,000 gulls may gather in late afternoon before heading beyond the breakers and spending the night on the ocean. The guide told us to look for a Peregrine Falcon if the gulls suddenly take off at the same time. Sure enough, the gulls in front of us departed quickly and we could hear a bird scream behind us. We turned to see a Peregrine Falcon that had just attacked a bird. The bird manage to escape, but was likely wounded. It is a sight to see. Click here to see a one minute video. At the 55 second mark in the video, you can see a Greater Black-Backed Gull in the middle background. These are the largest gulls in the world.
