Cabot Trail

Today we drove the Cabot Trail through Cape Breton National Park.  The trail loops through a large portion of Cape Breton Island and about 1/3 of it goes through the park.  We drove a good portion of it on the Atlantic side to get to our campground.  Therefore, we chose to stick to just the portion through the park and stop a few times for hikes, overlooks, and bakeries.

We went on a nice short hike to a waterfall and Dart was in good spirits.  Regis found a lovely walking stick at the falls that he said was calling to him.  He brought it back to the car and placed it on the ground.  We left without it.  A few hours later, on our return trip, we stopped to pick it up and it was gone.  Regis feels the stick was using him to get to someone else.

We stopped at a bakery in Cheticamp and Regis picked up a sandwich.  I got some French bread and some date bars.  We drove back the way we came and stopped at a picnic area on the water to eat lunch.  I had some cheese in the cooler and placed it in the French bread.  Delicious.  The only thing missing was the wine but I had some iced tea that I made (Bates and Watson Tahitian Blend).  After we ate our sandwiches we started into the date bars and all I can say is “oh my gosh”.  They were the best date bars I have ever eaten.  Regis and I were doing the look at each other like “do you want to drive back to the bakery for more goods?”  But, we resisted.  For now.  It’s a long drive from our campsite, but who knows what will happen over the next few days.

On the way back, we went for a hike to look for moose.  They remain elusive.

The Cabot Trail is one of the most beautiful drives I have done.  There is a Skyline hike that is on the ridge of the mountain overlooking the sea.  I would love to do the hike but it is the only hike that doesn’t allow dogs.  I understand why but boo hoo.  Perhaps in the future.

Regis spied a lady in our campground that he thought looked out of place.  He checked the license plate on her car and saw that she was from Florida.  She looked out of place because she had a tan.  No one from around here has a tan.
