Arriving in the Badlands
After a week of driving across the country (1,882 miles), we finally reached Badlands National Park. We were tired enough that after setting up camp and taking care of the dogs, an afternoon nap sounded like a better idea than sightseeing. After dinner, we decided to head into the park. The light wasn’t great for photography, but it didn’t matter. I was eager to see what the park had in store. I only got one landscape photo worth keeping, but sometimes that’s enough. The first evening was less about the photographs than becoming acquainted with a place I love.
Our first wildlife sighting was a group of pronghorns. Then, we saw prairie dogs. Lots of prairie dogs. Scientific estimates place the population somewhere between “more than I can count” and “everywhere I looked.”
I was satisfied with the prairie dogs and the pronghorns but on the way back to the campground, we saw mule deer, a white-tailed jack rabbit and a red-tailed hawk.

Linda the last time we were there we saw a wolf. We stopped the car and watched and he stood still and watched us for about a minute. We just stared

We are going to badlands tomorrow and Mount Rushmore today and maybe something else. Coming from visiting Theodore Roosevelt library yesterday! On our way home from Seattle. Weather was very nice there.

It continues to be hot, so I’m hoping we get a reprieve in Washington. We will be there for about 3 weeks before heading back. It may be too late by the time you see this, but I recommend Custer State Park if you are going to Mt. Rushmore. I love North Dakota. I hope you enjoyed your visit.

We were there in June on our way to Yellowstone. I loved that trip. Lots of driving but so worth it. Takes a really long time when you pull a trailer. We camped in Custer State Park in South Dakota. It was amazing.

We are going to Custer State Park this weekend. We head to Rapid City tomorrow. Unfortunately, I only have us staying a short time. I’ve been to Custer State Park and Wind Cave National Park a couple of times but never get tired of such amazing places. Did you camp while traveling?
